In January 1953, Barbara Poey from Edison, New Jersey, met Louis Rogge of Baton Rouge in Japan, where they were both stationed with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. They married in Tokyo on July 6, 1954. The couple settled in Baton Rouge in early 1959, with Louis working as a machinist for the LSU College of Chemistry and Physics and Barbara serving as a principal’s secretary for the East Baton Rouge Public School System after raising their children. Both retired in 1992.

In January 2017, they moved into the Louisiana Veteran’s Home together, sharing a room and delighted to be in a place where they receive exceptional kindness and care. In July 2024, their children and family gathered at the VA Home to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.
