BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana Family Forum applauds Attorney General Liz Murrill’s multistate lawsuit before the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the abortion “shield laws” of New York, California, and Massachusetts, along with a companion federal lawsuit against 30 individuals and organizations accused of running a sweeping, coordinated scheme to flood illegal abortion pills into pro-life states.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision returned the question of abortion to the states, New York, California, and Massachusetts have used shield laws to insulate their residents from accountability under pro-life states’ laws. These statutes block cooperation with out-of-state law enforcement, limit extradition, and shelter providers who mail abortion-inducing drugs across state lines. Louisiana’s lawsuit asks the U.S. Supreme Court to strike these laws down as violations of the Full Faith and Credit Clause, the equal-sovereignty doctrine, the Dormant Commerce Clause, and the federal common law of public nuisance.
The companion lawsuit targets the individuals and businesses behind that pipeline directly, alleging they advertised, prescribed, and shipped abortion drugs into Louisiana while minimizing the risks and downplaying the need for in-person medical care. Countless women and thousands of babies have been hospitalized or killed in Louisiana as a direct result of their actions.
“For years, we’ve watched abortion activists in other states brag about breaking our laws and endangering Louisiana women and babies with impunity,” said Gene Mills, president of Louisiana Family Forum. “Today, Attorney General Murrill said ‘enough is enough.’ Our Legislature has already settled this question for Louisiana, and no out-of-state provider or distributor should be empowered to overrule that decision.”
“These so-called ‘shield laws’ were never about protection. They were cover for an illegal pipeline of abortion drugs flowing into our state,” Mills stated. “We are grateful to Attorney General Murrill and to Alabama and Arkansas for standing with Louisiana and taking this fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Louisiana Family Forum will continue fighting for policies that protect the unborn and support mothers facing crisis pregnancies, in this case and every case that comes next.
